Boffins Develop “Wet Summer” Predictor for Ramsbottom

January 25, 2018 by Lee Leave a Comment

OK, not just for Ramsbottom, although rumour has it that it could be renamed to “Ramsbottom Summer” predictor (da-dum-tish).

Last year, the BBC reported that scientists have “found a connection between sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic in March and April and the subsequent summer’s rain or shine.”

What does this mean for us I hear you say. Upon review of the paper, it states that the predictability of getting soaked whilst cooking food next to our rusty infrequently used barbecues is around 56% (0.56 where 1 is would be a perfect prediction and 0 would be just a guess).

If this becomes commonplace, this could change everything. Festivals would be prepared for bad weather in much more realistic ways to avoid a repeat of the Y Festival last year as well as better stocking of items in local shops such as sunhats if we’re going to have a great summer or fancy umbrellas for the expected rain.

Ramsbottom CC on tour in Perth

December 14, 2017 by Lee Leave a Comment

One Eagle-eyed Facebook user (Darren) noticed this post on the Blackburn Rovers Facebook page and wondered who was behind it.

This flag has been seen at WACA Stadium in Perth. Nice to see Ramsbottom in the sunshine, feels like it’s been a while.

Ramsbottom Cricket Club probably wasn’t expecting to feature at the WACA anytime soon.

Some sleuthing on Neil Webster’s part and the responsible party was identified as Lee Kenyon.

Nice work Lee! Does anyone else have any examples of where they’ve taken Ramsbottom on tour?

You’ll need to go quite far to beat our own Mel Southworth though who managed to put a Ramsbottom flag on the summit of Everest (it’s not in the photo above, Mel is though).

Man loses life in fatal traffic accident

November 15, 2017 by Lee Leave a Comment

Ramsbottom was brought to a standstill early on Wednesday morning due to a tragic incident in which a man lost his life.

Early on the morning of the 15th of November 2017, a man driving a Vauxhall Astra car crashed into a wall at the junction of Bolton Road West and Longsight Road near the Hare and Hounds pub at around 6:00 am.

The man came from the Ramsbottom area and was heading down Bolton Road West when the incident happened.

Police closed the road to cars and pedestrians from as far back as the junction between Dundee Lane and Nuttall Lane, in addition, children heading to Woodhey High School were diverted around the incident.

Police are providing support to the family of the man in this difficult time and I would like to offer my sympathy to the family and friends of the man.

Police have appealed for anybody with information about the collision to contact the GMP Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111, this includes anyone with CCTV footage from the area or dashcams.

Baratxuri come away with two awards from Manchester Food and Drink Festival 2017

October 10, 2017 by Lee 1 Comment

Baratxuri Manager Jamie Preston showing off awards

It’s not surprising that the talented teams behind the great Ramsbottom Restaurants we have like The Eagle and Child, Baratxuri and Lavanter to name just three, win awards with the hard work and dedication that they put in.

This time the multi award winning is down to Baratxuri. They won Out of town venue of the year and Casual Restaurant of the year in the Manchester Food and Drink Festival 2017 awards.

Last year it was The Eagle and Child and Levanter who brought home the silverware.

Amazing work for all involved and thank you for bringing home yet more awards for our fantastic town of Ramsbottom!
