Two Ramsbottom mums launch children’s clothes swap

April 28, 2026 by Lee Leave a Comment

Two local mums are starting a children’s clothes swap in Ramsbottom to help families access free clothing and keep perfectly good stuff out of landfill.

Caroline Donohoe and Lucy Gilson came up with the idea after seeing a news report about clothing poverty – kids going to school in clothes with holes or shoes that don’t fit.

They posted about it on Facebook and got an immediate response. MotherZen on Market Place offered to host, and the Little Clothing Club was born.

Caroline, a legal executive, said: “It’s just so upsetting to know that they’re in that position when there’s so much stuff going to waste and a lot of us have an excess of clothes that could be passed down and passed on.”

The first swap is on Sunday, May 17, from 2-4pm at MotherZen (2 Market Place). It’s open to everyone – you can bring an item and swap it for another, or donate £2 and take up to five items. There’s also a QR code for donations to cover practical costs like hangers and posters.

They’ve already had drop-offs and have plenty of clothes for babies and toddlers, but they’re particularly looking for sizes that fit 3-16 year olds.

Lucy, who works as a virtual assistant, explained they’re keeping the £2 option to make sure there’s enough for everyone who comes, and to prevent people taking things to sell on.

Down the line, they hope to work with schools and community centres to get bundles directly to families who need them.

Tori Johnson from MotherZen said: “I was passionate about supporting The Little Clothing Club as anything that supports parents and builds community is aligned with our ethos.”

I’m back! I thought given that today is International Podcast Day, it’s as good a day as any to bring the podcast back. Sorry for being away so long.

This episode of the podcast is a return to the regular form, I’ve got some news, events and some Ramsbottom United scores thrown in too.

2018 Head for the Hills Festival

Did you manage to get down to Head for the Hills festival? Me and my son did the usual of us going for the whole weekend. A little bit more expensive this year, in addition I had to pay for my son whereas in previous years under 6’s had been free. It was only a nominal amount, but I was slightly disappointed at that.

Can I honestly say I had as much fun as previous years? No. Something wasn’t quite clicking. It could have been the weather but there was clearly fewer people there this year than last year and there were also fewer stages setup. Could this be the beginning of the end for Head for the Hills being situated in Ramsbottom? I hope not, I’ll still go year after year whilst it’s here, but if it was to move away to Burrs for example, the lack of the convenience of just being able to wander down would likely mean me not going.

Don’t get me wrong, there were some really great things at the festival, it’s just this year felt a little muted.

It feels like it’s been so long since the last episode, mainly because I’ve been on holiday and between the last recording and this one, a few things have gone on in local news, a few events have been announced and a couple of the hundreds of potholes have been filled in.

One of the things I did this weekend with the family was take a trip down, what I believe is called Train Tracks Footpath or something along those lines, basically the public footpath that goes from the Nuttall Road Estates towards Summerseat. Then we stopped at Summerseat Park where my son had a go on various different park equipment and by pure coincidence bumped into one of his friends from nursery and got chatting to his parents David and Helen, which was a lovely surprise. We’d never met before, but we knew the boys must have known each other as they were calling out each other’s names as they ran around.
