If you think that you’d need to head to Manchester to be able to take in a comedy show you’d be mistaken. I’m here to tell you this episode about a great family friendly comedy night that’s based right here in our town of Ramsbottom. It’s only here until September more viewings, but you could see it FOR FREE, just keep listening to find out how!

This month I caught up with ComedySportz who were putting on a show for the lovely Ramsbottom Civic Hall patrons.

Let me start by saying this, although this is a family friendly show, don’t let that put you off, it is very funny and the teams have a great rapport with each other, which you’d expect given some of them have been doing this for 15 years!

If you’ve ever seen Whose Line is it Anyway (and if you haven’t, click the link to the left to see some on YouTube) then you’ll have an idea what it’s like. Essentially there are two teams who are battling it out for points from the referee.

There are many rounds and the team get to choose which game they play beforehand, a little like Crystal Maze but less mazy and certainly less Crystaly.

The sample I provided at the start of this episode was of the round they call “New Choice” where the teams improve but at any point the referee can blow the whistle causing the player who just spoke to have to choose something else to say.

It really was a great night, and if you’re thinking of going to see them, here’s two things to check, firstly here are some directions to Ramsbottom Civic Hall although if you’re local, you probably don’t need them…

…and now for an amazing giveaway!

Thanks to Bury Venues and ComedySportz we can get you and a friend (or enemy, whatever they’re your tickets, you can do what you like) to go to see ComedySportz at Ramsbottom Civic hall on Saturday the 15th of July absolutely FREE!

To be in with a chance please click on the window below to follow the steps. The winner will be chosen at random using the tool and winners will be notified. Entrance closes on 10th of July.

In the past week I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to catch up with Pat Duggan and record an interview. I’ve been into the The Doghouse Jazz Bar a few times before but never really spoke to Pat much, you don’t tend to get much time for things like that on a night out, not when people are working anyway.

I booked a day off with work and headed down Kay Brow and turned into the industrial units through the tunnel and into the yard. When I approached Pat was already there mopping up, he looked up as I said “Hi Pat” and put down his mop. He looked genuinely pleased to see me, which considering it was actually his wife who had done most of the arranging of the interview was nice to see.

The Doghouse Jazz Bar is unique, it has an air of nostalgia whilst remaining up to date with a good array of drinks on offer at the bar. It was easy to see from the way Pat was talking that the Jazz Bar is his baby, he’s not in it to make millions but is firmly in it for the love of it.

During the interview Pat even admitted that he cleans his own toilets in the club, now if that’s not love I don’t know what is.

The Dog House Jazz bar has actually featured in at least one music video, that video by the band mentioned by Pat during our interview Sister Rose. The video even features Pat himself, I presume playing himself, or at least the club owner.

I really hope you liked the interview this week and I’d really appreciate if you could take the time to share it with your friends. If you didn’t like it, feel free to share it with your enemies.

Ramsbottom United BadgeRamsbottom United News: [34:34]

It’s not been plain sailing for Ramsbottom United recently. Since I spoke to you last back at the end of February we have played four matches had one win, one draw and two losses. It’s not all doom and gloom though. Our new signings have started well and integrated into the team and we also welcome back Lee Gaskell who left Ramsbottom United 18 months ago to join Darlington.

Whilst at Ramsbottom he originally made 224 appearances scoring 113 goals which is a damn good ratio if you ask me. To put it into perspective, Sergio Aguero according to Premier League.com has scored 114 goals for Manchester City in 171 matches.

Welcome to This is Rammy, your weekly podcast for all things Ramsbottom.

This week in Ramsbottom we’ve had a bit of a breeze whip through of the name Storm Doris. Doris went on to remove many fence panel (shout out to Paul Jenkins) and some trees fell over too. As far as I’m aware nobody locally was seriously injured. There were some reports of minor injuries being sustained, (another shout out to Paul Jenkins), I even ended up getting involved with moving bits of a fallen tree.

What happened was on Thursday, I was just watching social media, well it was my on my day off and I noticed someone report that a tree had fallen down on The Rake. Right, I thought, time for some on the stop finger on the pulse journalism.

I left my house and started running up towards The Rake, before realising that was a stupid idea given I had to pick my son up in just ten minutes so I turned round and got my car.

Once at the bottom of The Rake, it wasn’t obvious where this tree was, I couldn’t see it from the bottom, so I decided to drive up and take a look. Right at the top was the tree, fallen from the

Coming up this week on the website I’ve got a few recipes from our fantastic local restaurants Pancake Day

This week also saw my Mother-in-law come to stay for a few days. Now, this might just be my family, but everytime she comes to visit, things start appearing in the house.

These things are generally trinkets, gizmos and whatnots. To sum up, tat, at least in my opinion.

She LOVES to shop. Let me emphasise that again, LOVES IT. The types of places she particularly likes is Lakeland, The Range, Paperchase, you get the idea.

Now, our house, I think has everything we need. I’m the kind of person that if I need something, I’ll buy it and that void is filled pretty quickly. Essentially, if we don’t have it, we don’t need it.

So my mother-in-law arrived, and only a day or so later there’s now a kitchen roll holder and a banana hook. These are separate things, I don’t think any company is out there making a combined kitchen roll come banana hook. Although if they did I’m sure it would arrive in our house soon after.

Don’t get me wrong, I can see the value in some items, like the kitchen roll holder, but did we REALLY need one? Probably not, I’ve survived 33 years without a banana tree hook thing, I think I’ve done more than prove I can do without.

On Tuesday the 21st of Feb Ramsbottom United were home to Clitheroe in the Evo-stik League.

Ryan Salmon opened the scoresheet in just the 4th minute scoring his 10th league goal of the season before Cliterhoe players Luke Wall and Kurt Willoughby decided they wanted some of the action scoring on the 32nd and 55th and 58th minutes before Paul Linwood brought it back to 3-2 to Clitheroe on the 64th minute. Fan favourite Gareth Seddon of local cheese fame brought it back to 3-3 on 73 minutes before Kurt Willoughby broke Ramsbottom hearts on the 81st minute leaving the game at 4-3 to Clitheroe.

Thanks to everyone who went to the match. This was the highest Tuesday night turnout of the season so far with 210 recorded in attendance.

This loss has set Ramsbottom back to 10th place with 36 points and Clitheroe are currently in 5th.

If you’re just getting to the point of 2017 where your good intentions and New Year’s resolutions are starting to wane, then this week’s guest could be just the ticket to give you that boost you need.

Richard Ferguson is an international motivational speaker, as well as this he’s a management consultant working with some large familiar global businesses.

Richard certainly knows his stuff and since chatting with Richard I actually managed to release more content for the website and get some of those niggling tasks off my list.

I got back from this interview in very strong winds and unfortunately mine and my wife’s cars had both ran out of washer fluid. I had some trouble popping up the bonnet of my wife’s car, but I managed to get it done, sometimes you don’t quite know where the latch is, especially when it’s not your car.

So I was wrapped up with scarf in 3 degree temperatures and 20 mile an hour winds filling up my wife’s washer fluid after the interview, it was late,we both have work in the morning, but I got it done. So I lowered the bonnet, and it wouldn’t close. I pushed it, nothing. I lifted and dropped it, nothing. Nightmare. So now, I was stuck with a bonnet half open in very strong winds.

On the subject of things closing, well, in the case of the bonnet it was the opposite but have you noticed that both The Masons Arms has closed as well as Reel2Real Cinema?

I’m not sure exactly why The Masons arms has closed, if you know why get in touch, it’s not too often a pub goes out of business in Ramsbottom so hopefully it won’t be long until it opens back up again.

I’m gutted I never got to Reel2Real too, I guess that’s probably partly why it’s closed, too many people intending to get there, and just not getting chance.

Today 10th placed Bamber Bridge faced 11th placed Ramsbottom United.

Away at Bamber Bridge, Ramsbottom could have caused a real problem for themselves when a handball in the box gifted Bamber Bridge a penalty.

Thankfully this was missed and at half time it remained nil nil. The goal drought was ended though when on 55 minutes Max Hazeldine scored a fantastic goal after the ball was hoofed up the field towards him.

This win now puts Ramsbottom United into 9th place in the league however we’re only two points away from 6th and with two games in hand that could be a reality. A fantastic run of form for the Rams this year making it five wins, two drawn matches and just one loss this year so far.

The next match for Ramsbottom United is at home against Clitheroe on Tuesday the 21st February. Kick-off is at [19:45].

Welcome to This is Rammy, I’ve got a fantastic interview this week with local restaurant owner Mellissa Brown of The Mouse Trap.

When we first moved to Ramsbottom me and my family had always stared in wonder at the ever increasing sign that was outside The Mouse Trap with the earliest dates available to book for their cheese and wine nights. One day, we thought, we’ll book and get on that list.

Then, a year or so later and a renovation happened, and the set massively future dates for bookings seemed to go away. This is when we learned that the new owner was Mellissa Brown, also known as “Gareth Seddons Girlfriend” but I wanted to get away from this image as The Mouse Trap is very firmly Mellissa’s business and her passion.

Over the course of the interview I came to realise that this isn’t “just a day job for Gavs girlfriend” but is firmly something that Mellissa loves to do. She is as enthusiastic about cheese as she is hosting. Which given she owns a cheese restaurant is very fitting.

Gary Neville visits The Mouse Trap

After the interview Mellissa let me in on a secret, that The Mouse Trap was going to be having a very special guest on Friday. That special guest being Gary Neville, ex Manchester United player and current football pundit. I promised Mellissa I’d keep schtum, despite the fact I wanted to tell the world.

I hope you enjoy this week’s interview episode of the podcast, I’ve got a few more coming up in the weeks to come.

I took a few photos whilst I was in The Mouse Trap as the setting is lovely, it’s got a real homely feel to it, almost like you’re in your own living room. Also, as of release of this episode, the sign is still not yet back on The Mouse Trap, but given the trend in these secret venues like this one in Manchester, maybe they should leave it off?

Ramsbottom United BadgeRamsbottom United News: [22:13]

This weekend 13th placed Ramsbottom United took on 9th placed Brighouse Town at home in the race to find points and ultimately safety in the league. A goalless first half was soon forgotten on 48 minutes when yet another debutant scored on their first outing in the form of Darrhyl Mason sinking a goal from close range. The only other scored of the match was the goal machine that is Ryan Salmon who smashed in a penalty on the 88th minute. There was no goal from the league’s third highest goal scorer Michael Fish of Brighouse Town, he must have been feeling under the weather.

How are you? Have you managed to get out in the breaks in rain recently? I don’t know about you but when I’m out for a walk I feel a bit of a fraud. Not because I don’t often go out for walks, but because we live here I tend to be under-dressed compared to others I pass.

These people tend to be kitted up properly in boots, thermals, walking sticks and woolly hats, and me, well I feel like I practically stepped out there in slippers.

Several news articles have popped up this week that I thought it worth talking about, starting off with:

Plans have been submitted for Park 66 which contain KFC, drive-through Costa Coffee and gym. – [1:15]

I don’t know if you ever visit Park 66 just off the M66 motorway, but I quite often nip into the ASDA petrol station on my way home to fill up. I spoke last year about the old cinema at Park 66 that had recently been demolished and mused on what the plans might be for the site.

The site became unused back in 2010 when the Cinema closed and the retail units on site shut up shop too leaving pretty much just the McDonalds and ASDA on their own.

These plans have now been submitted to Bury Council and they include the following:

KFC
JD Sports
a gym
and a DRIVE THRU Costa.

All these reported by Bury Times.

Almost 50 workers set to lose jobs at Stubbins Mill in due to paper machine shutdown Ramsbottom. – [2:37]

Bury Times reports that company owner SCA have confirmed that they are now in a “period of consultation”  with workers regarding the loss of jobs. Back in 2015 SCA closed down Paper Machine 1 causing the loss of around 30 jobs at the time.

Structure work has already been going on at the site with several buildings knocked down, I don’t know if this is related to the Paper Machine 2 closure however.

Trains bosses celebrate as 201,000 people use East Lancs stations in 2016 – [4:23]

East Lancs Railway have been celebrating after a reported 25 percent increase in visitors in 2016. Over 201,000 people used the line during that time. The appearance of the Flying Scotsman naturally contributed to these numbers with around 30,000 visitors alone coming to see it. The question will be, can the East Lancs Railway continue this trend in 2017.

As reported on Lancashire Telegraph

Ramsbottom United BadgeRamsbottom United News: – [5:13]

Today February 4th 2017, Ramsbottom United saw off Ossett Albion in a fantastic four nil win. All four goals were seen in the first half of the match with the first being a penalty from Gareth Seddon on 27 minutes followed closely by Reagan Ogle on 30 minutes, Nathan Webb on 36 minutes and lastly Paul Linwood on 45 minutes.

This has placed United in a lucky 13th position in the league. Ossett Albion have now dropped to 18th in the league.

The next match for Ramsbottom is against Brighouse Town at Home on Saturday the 11th of February

Welcome to This is Rammy, the podcast dedicated to Ramsbottom, the small town just North of Manchester.

The plans for Ramsbottom Police Station have been approved. The application is for two ground floor shops as well as eight apartments above. The style is mentioned to be in keeping with how the area would have originally looked.

If you remember, the person who purchased the land in February last year when the Police Station was auctioned off was our very own Councillor Rob Hodkinson and his wife.

One comment that Rob said back in November 2015 as written in Bury Times was:

But Ramsbottom MP David Nuttall and Ramsbottom ward councillors Ian Bevan and Rob Hodkinson have raised concerns about the plans to sell the building, fearing a rise in crime if there is no police presence in the town.

How do you feel about this? I was looking at the planning permission and reading through the comments, several people have complained about the drainage on the current site as well as several people complaining about the fact the proposed building will be much bigger than the existing bank.

Work has already started on Ramsbottom Police Station

It won’t be long until the old Ramsbottom Police Station is demolished.

It’s true, initially I looked at the plans and thought “that’s an impressive looking building” without considering the implications of what would happen with the land around the proposed shops and residences.

It’s not clear exactly what will be in the shops that are created, potentially it could be more cafes, which would be disappointing as we do seem to be getting into a cafe bar scene a little too much. It would be nice to have some proper shops back. One argument is that shops find it difficult to compete with online. I agree, when you only factor in cost online is almost always going to win. However, I am a firm believer in shopping local. I do still buy certain things online.

One positive note is that Cllr Hodkinson did say with regards to the shop types:

It is important that we maintain the balance between the night and day time economy.

I feel if you can buy it locally, you should, even if it’s slightly more expensive. It’s less about you saving a few £’s and more about the area remaining enjoyable.

There’s not exactly a glum, gloomy future ahead for Ramsbottom, but it’s easy to listen to the negativity and believe this. If you feel that the area is changing for the worse though, rather than complaining on Facebook and forums, get off your arse and do something about it. Write to our Councillors and MP David Nuttall. It’s one thing to say that they never listen, but it’s another to never actually try in the first place.

Me and my son took a trip to Ramsbottom Market to pick up some fruit and veg this weekend. It was the usual Saturday market, not the speciality farmers market that appears each month. My aim was to get him to pick out some fruit that he would enjoy as he’s very fussy and doesn’t like fruit much at all. Not only was it great to see him being involved picking out the fruit (he chose Oranges and Kiwis) but the customer service was fantastic too.

We were paying for our fruit when the lady serving us asked my son if he’d like a banana, he said yes please and the lady shouted for “Dave, give this little lad a banana”. My son ran over and took it off him like some kind of ape. I did have to remind him to say thank you, but he did. I think the excitement got to him.

Ramsbottom United BadgeRamsbottom United News: [13:15]

On a weekend where there were several shock results in the FA Cup, our own Ramsbottom United sadly were unable to continue in this vein and come out the victors against Colne.

After Tuesday’s match was postponed due to an apparent fault on the generators causing the ground to be swallowed by darkness (not for the first time in recent weeks in Ramsbottom) we were then looking on to our match on Saturday the 28th of January.

Ramsbottom United faced Colne at home and were sadly overcome by a more determined side losing three nil on the night. Despite this though, there is some good news as we had one of the highest attendances in a league match this season with 269 people in attendance. Thanks to everyone who came out to watch the match.

This result now leaves Ramsbottom in 13th position in the tables.

The next match for Ramsbottom United is away to Ossett Albion on Saturday the 4th of February.

Blackout causes outbreak of candles in Ramsbottom – [0:36]

Welcome to This is Rammy, the podcast about Ramsbottom and the surrounding area where the power has returned! No, not me, the power to Ramsbottom. If you’re a resident of the local area you’ll no doubt be aware that Ramsbottom suffered a large power cut on Thursday the 19th of January due to a high voltage fault at an electricity substation near to Ramsbottom Train Station.

Eyewitnesses, (or maybe that should be earwitnesses) reported hearing a loud bang before being plunged into darkness. Fear and panic quickly spread around the town with reports of some people buying up all of the packets of Haribo from ALDI and some reports from unknown sources of people turning to cannibalism. Not really, just checking you were paying attention.

Local fire crews were on hand to divert traffic from Bridge Street causing large tailbacks and diversions around the area. My sons nursery was forced to evacuate for safety reasons leaving staff and children in the cold singing songs by torchlight to keep their spirits up until parents arrived.

The power was off from approximately twenty past four in the afternoon until six forty five. Rush hour, not the best time for it to happen, but when is there a good time for an emergency such as this?

Posted by Christina Applebee on Thursday, 19 January 2017

Local establishments such as Irwell Works were forced to breakout the candles, luckily for them they are a regular addition to the ambiance of a night in The Brewery, so they were on hand.

The Blackout wasn’t the only thing in the news this week, it’s been pretty busy from a news perspective.

Woodhey High School comes 4th in Bury GCSE Tables 2016 – [02:43]

First up, it’s a massive congratulations to local high school Woodhey who came 4th in the whole of Bury in the GCSE league tables with around 68% of pupils receiving GCSE’s within the highly prized A* to C bracket. In this day and age when it’s getting more and more difficult to pass the GCSE’s that’s a fantastic result so well done there.

Grants Tower could become an attraction once more. – [03:40]

Also in the news this week, local landowner Gary Buckley has put forward a request for planning permission to partly restore Grants Tower. Grants Tower originally stood overlooking Ramsbottom on the opposite side of the Valley to Peel Tower; built in 1828 to commemorate Mill Owners the Grants Brothers; William and Daniel who were instrumental in building much of Ramsbottom.

Here’s a video of Grants Tower as it was in May 2016:

Ramsbottom United BadgeRamsbottom United News: – [05:47]

So far it’s been a great year for Ramsbottom United, with two draws and two wins. Our last match was away to Colwyn Bay in which we came away the victors with a last minute injury time goal by Josh Askew. It was actually Joshs last match for us too, so this was a particularly special moment. Josh was on loan from Blackburn Rovers.

Ramsbottom United now sit in 10th position in the table with 37 points. Our next match is at home on Tuesday the 24th of January against 16th placed Hyde United, kick off is at [19:45]. We last faced Hyde United back in 2015 in which we lost 4-1 and 5-0. Let’s sort that goal difference out and send them packing.

The upcoming Saturday home match after Hyde is Saturday the 28th of January against 9th placed Colne. Colne are due to play 1st placed Lancaster City when we take on Hyde United, hopefully a loss for them will mean we’re in a good position to jump ahead provided we win.

So, since New Year have you got on your list of good intentions an action to get out more? Maybe it’s running? I know, I know, the weather hasn’t exactly been great with the snow recently, but hear me out.

On the podcast this week I speak to the fantastic Rowan Ardill of Ramsbottom Running Club which he started only a few months ago.

Since launching officially around the end of October 2016 the newest running club in Ramsbottom has grown from strength to strength. Starting with 25 people in that first week took Rowan by a pleasant surprise, however they now have over 60 paid members and Rowan is ecstatic with how it’s going.

Rowan

Rowan is well experienced with running and clubs being that he’s an Engagement Officer for ParkRun in Bolton where some of the members of Ramsbottom Running Club travel from, as well as this Rowan has a degree in Sports Development and Physical Activity so you really are in safe hands.

Ramsbottom Running Club is on course to be affiliated with England Athletics, if it’s not already.

The even has their own Ramouflage!

There are fees involved with the running club but they’re extremely reasonable and for example £14 of the membership goes towards England Athletics.

Ramsbottom Running Club Fees:

  • Standard Membership – £25 per year
  • Concessionary (Student, Pensioners, Unwaged) – £20 per year
  • Second Claim Member (if you’re already in a running club) – £12

As well as the above fees there is a nominal £1 fee per run to go in the Rammybank.

If after the interview you’re keen to give it a go, you will find them at Irwell Works Brewery in Ramsbottom every Tuesday night at 7pm.

Thanks very much to Rowan for coming on the show and I hope he’s managed to convince you to get out running.

I do know that as this episode is released, the Running Club had 53 members turn up

Do you have a £50,000 note in your wallet, purse or till? – [24:09]

Here’s something that will make your 2017 a very good one indeed. Micro engraver Graham Short has etched four miniature 5mm drawings of Jane Austen onto the new £5 notes and reintroduced them back into circulation. As of today only two have been located, the most recent being in a Christmas card.

The value of the notes is assumed to be around £50,000 and if anyone finds them they have been asked to

The notes all start with AM32 88555, the remaining notes in the wild are AM32 885552 and AM32 885554.

Ramsbottom United have continued their run of good form of no losses in 2017 with a Home win against Bamber Bridge which ended 1-0. We’ve got a few games in hand compared to 10th placed Colwyn Bay.

A first for the podcast this year, and some people release a retrospective view on the previous year before the year is out, not me, with how unpredictable 2016 was I didn’t want to speak to soon and maybe miss aliens landing in St Paul’s gardens or something along those lines.

Now that it actually IS 2017 I’m pretty confident nothing big is going to sneak up on me for the previous year, unless that thing is the invention of time travel!

I’ve rounded up some of the noteable events throughout Ramsbottom in the past year, so buckle up, sit back and take a load off as I go through some things that happened in our small town of Ramsbottom.

January – [01:26]

Ramsbottom continues massive cleanup operation after floods

2016 will for some be the year that many big celebrities died such as Prince, David Bowie and Alan Rickman. For residents of Ramsbottom it will be remembered for some of the worst flooding to hit the area in living memory. Although the flooding actually happened on boxing day 2015, Ramsbottom was still very much engaged in the clean up operation well into January and some even still to this day have not returned back to normality.

The flooding of the local area brought sadness and misery as well as bringing down The Waterside pub in Summerseat.

AD Plant plans cancelled

After over two long years of battling with Peel Environmental, they finally gave up with their proposal to build an Anaerobic Digestion plant in Ramsbottom. This was a massive achievement for the community who all rallied behind getting this badly planned facility cancelled.

The Flying Scotsman Returns

In January we also set our pistons ready for the Flying Scotsman to make a return to the railways after a ten year restoration project.

The project cost £4.2million and the Flying Scotsman made it’s return on January the 9th.

You can also see this amazing 360 degree video of the Flying Scotsman on the New York Times website.

Paul Jenkins, friend to the podcast and all round nice guy published his first book, Requires Improvement. The book, funded by a kickstarter campaign and is in part based on some of his experiences as an ex High School Teacher. Paul has actually released another book of poems since last year, and is in the process of releasing his third which is in partnership with his son. Ramsbottom saw a couple of new businesses and a massive achievement from a local resident.

Coffee shop Grind and Tamp opens

After Love Shoos closed it’s doors there were a few question marks about what was going to open up in it’s place. The answer was a small coffee shop called Grind and Tamp that aimed to offer local residents a real cup of coffee. With owner Adrian at the helm he’s brought the art of coffee making to Rammyites lips.

I’ll hopefully have Adrian on a future episode of This is Rammy, but I do know that he recently became a father. I guess that’s one benefit of owning a coffee shop though, easy access to much needed caffeine.

Another change was when the barber shop on Bolton Street closed, Kerry Khan opened the popular upcycling and interior design shop Hearts for Homes. It launched with a bang, or at least a pop of bucks fizz and a slice of cake for new customers as announced on their Facebook page

Kerry was previously working as a nurse when she came upon the upcycling habit and decided that a shop that sold what she likes would fit in well in Ramsbottom.

Mel Southworth reached the summit of Mount Everest

After Mel’s previous attempt to summit Mount Everest was tragically cut short due to the earthquake that killed around 9000 people, Mel vowed to return. In actual fact Mel wasn’t in great condition when she set off for her journey having came down with pneumonia but against the odds she finally did it, in -30 temperatures and in pitch black too.

I’ve spoken to Mel on a number of occasions, here I interviewed her way back on episode 10 of the podcast after the catastrophic quake:

Mel Southworth speaks to us from Everest – Episode 10

Bury Times – Ramsbottom explorer Melanie Southworth, aged 48, has reached the top of Mount Everest

June – [08:53]

A large sinkhole opened up on Tanners Street and threatened to swallow up cars whole. OK, it wasn’t quite that bad but at the time this caused some all too familiar traffic problems around Ramsbottom. My best guess is that the flooding towards the end of 2015 had an impact on this, and no doubt we’ll start to see other effects in years to come.

July – [10:00]

The Venetian Hideaway is destroyed by fire

Popular Italian restaurant The Venetian Hideaway was badly damaged by a basement fire and remains closed to this day. I spoke to Paolo shortly after it happened to get an understanding of the events surrounding the fire.

October – [11:47]

Course record for The Rake Hillclimb is beaten

October saw the popular Rake Hillclimb take place with what can be called a success in the effort of bringing more women to the sport. That success was evident in that the Women’s Rake Hillclimb Record was beaten. The previous time set by Lyn Hamel of 3 minutes, 8.9 seconds set back in 2012 was beaten by Becky Lewis who set a time of 3 minutes 8.7 seconds.

Two Ramsbottom restaurants pick up some more awards

Both the Eagle and Child and Levanter came away with prizes at the Manchester Food and Drink awards. Levanter picked up Neighbourhood Restaurant of the Year and Eagle and Child walked away with Food Pub of the Year. The Eagle and Child actually won four awards during 2016 and came runner up in another. As I’ve mentioned in the past, their window sill which currently houses their awards was getting quite full, thankfully though the Eagle and Child are having some work done soon, maybe they will get a cabinet for them all?

Ramsbottom clearing up at Manchester Food and Drink Awards 2016

November – [14:08]

The coffee bar Drinc opened in what used to be Barclays Bank just across the road from Ramsbottom Station. The renovation of Barclays Bank had the town talking about what it could be when someone heard it was going to be a coffee shop. There was some people questioning is we needed another coffee shop given the existence of several other cafes in the area already, but so far Drinc seems to be doing good business and it’s never empty.

As well as this, Drinc has now gone on to become not only a coffee bar but a venue for evening too selling cocktails and other alcoholic beverages.

Call down today to see our new coffee bar!WE ARE OFFICIALLY OPEN!Today we will be closing at 5pmHope to see you all soon! 🍰☕️
