World Book Day at Ramsbottom Library

March 8, 2015 by Lee Leave a Comment

Last Thursday it was World Book Day at Ramsbottom Library.

You’ve all heard the saying, “Never judge a book by it’s cover” well Ramsbottom Library, along with all Libraries in Bury put together a very clever idea using just some brown paper packing to combat this.

The idea? Bag-a-book, which is?

Take one book, identify it’s reader age, put it into a brown paper bag, and label it with the age. That’s it. Could contain Wizards, could contain Fairies, who knows.

That’s how great this idea is, it’s SO simple, yet ties in to mystery and mystique before you’ve even got the book home.

I hope all those children who took part in this gave the books a chance, World Book Day is a great time to remember your local libraries, and Ramsbottom Library is a great place full of books and souvenirs from around Ramsbottom.

You can find it on Carr Street, about 200 meters past the Urn and just past the Doctors.

The Ramsbottom community have launched a new Facebook page called. “What’s on for kids in Ramsbottom” (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1585053361736238)

This page has been setup to bring more specific events and activities for children in Ramsbottom.

Most of the other pages had businesses advertising things such as DIY and cleaning services which naturally weren’t relevant if you just wanted to find something to do for you and your family.

Here’s hoping that this new page brings with it all the right content and discussion.

Over £2000 worth of damage caused to Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary Ramsbottom charity shop

Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary Charity shop has it's windows damaged
Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary Charity shop has it’s windows damaged

Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary on Bridge Street in Ramsbottom was this weekend subjected to damage to both it’s windows which will result in a bill for over £2000 for repairs.

This is a considerable amount considering that the general takings of the charity are barely over £1000 a week. This is a huge setback for their fund raising which was caused by mindless vandals.
The incident happened between the hours of 4pm on February 20 and 9.25am on February 21.

If anyone has any information, Police can be contacted on 101 free or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Donations to the charity can be made on their website: http://www.bleakholt.org/donations-to-the-animal-sanctuary.html

Whilst you’re there, why not see if you can help by adopting a pet? http://www.bleakholt.org/pets-available/

And the prize, for Ramsbottom 2014 Best Independent Shop, goes to….

February 21, 2015 by Lee Leave a Comment

Nearly 20 years of hard work has paid off for Jeff Lowe of Woodholme Supplies on Bridge Street. Not only has his local and loyal customers been purchasing their various items such as tools, lightbulbs, gas and many other essentials, but they had also been voting in the local award for Best Independent Shop.

I can honestly say I’ve been a customer of Woodholme Supplies ever since I moved to Ramsbottom, it’s a real life saver when you have that little DIY job where you’re missing that vital part, or if your light bulbs blows unexpectedly. Woodholme Supplies is always there, and it’s great to see that local businesses are recognised and rewarded in Ramsbottom.

Ramsbottom is made up of many independent businesses who all contribute to our local community, without them, our landscape of shops would be vastly different.

This is Rammy would like to congratulate Jeff Lowe on the award of best independent shop, and here’s to many more years of success and recognition.

ThisisRammy hit Chocolate Café for afternoon lunch

December 14, 2014 by Lee Leave a Comment

Me and a few friends had a lovely meal in the Ramsbottom Chocolate Café yesterday afternoon, although the place was very busy, the service was second to none, all staff were very helpful and our food arrived promptly.

Unlike what you’d expect, not all of the food is chocolate based, however the chilli I had did happen to have some dark chocolate in it, but I feel that’s more for effect then taste, I couldn’t taste it anyway.

As I mentioned, I had the chilli with baked potato for my meal, but the crowning glory was the Milk Chocolate Hot Chocolate with Ginger, it was amazing. Very sweet and rich, I could only have one, but that would be one a day and I’d still never get bored of them.

Once you’ve finished eating you can head downstairs to buy some chocolate or just watch them making it in the viewing area. It’s difficult to not be tempted by the array of chocolates on offer. I bought some chocolate to remind me of my visit, sampled the free chocolate drops on the till area and paid our bill. The smell is great whilst they’re creating the chocolates, however given it’s so close to the till, it’s easy to become distracted when prompted to “Please remove your card”.

Ultimately, this is a brilliantly executed destination should you find yourself in Ramsbottom, if you don’t find yourself in Ramsbottom, why not make a special trip, there is LOTS on offer, I defy you to be bored. Plus, it’s hard to miss the Chocolate Café, it’s opposite the big metal sculpture, officially called the Tilted Vase but effectionately known to most as the Urn (or Urnie).
