Jackie Griffith’s and daughter Isabel are two people who haven’t sat around waiting for things to get fixed, they’ve had intention, direction, a purpose and have got s*&t done!
After retiring early to look after her parents, Jackie found that she had some spare time, and with her daughter Isabel, who had recently returned from a thought provoking trip to Madagascar, felt starting regular events to tidy up around Ramsbottom will be a great use of their time.
With the help of Isabel, they created the Facebook Group Litter Picking Ramsbottom to help bring in some volunteers from around the area to help. Many hands make light work as the saying goes.
Jackie strongly believes it’s a social responsibility that we all have to help clear the little and general waste that is stuck in our undergrowth. With more people onboard, more can get done.
It was when volunteering in Madagascar in 2017 that Isabel came face to face with the sheer scale of a problem plastic and litter has on the planet.
It’s not just Jackie and Isabel though, there are at the time of posting this episode 127 other members in the Facebook group. Which is fantastic, but what is really needed is more people being able to go on a pick, as there tends to be the same faces each time.
In around ten litter picks the Ramsbottom Litter Picking Group has collected roughly enough litter to fill 60 large bags, that’s not only an amazing achievement but it’s a shocking thought.
I hope you enjoyed the podcast interview this week.
