Tool to help reduce “volume” on Ramsbottom social media groups.

March 14, 2019 by Lee Leave a Comment

Google Chrome Tune promises to bring calm back to comments.

We all know how fantastic social media can be, but what about when things go a bit too far?

This tool could be something quite valuable in a world where there have been, lets say “heated debates” on Facebook groups for Ramsbottom often.

Now, this tool shouldn’t removed valid comments and complaints, however it should be possible to remove comments that have deteriorated into name calling.

This extension is very new having only been release in the past few days. You need to have Google Chrome installed and this will only work on a computer, so sadly you can’t benefit from this on mobile.

The extension is called Tune, from Jigsaw (a division of Google). What it does is allow you to “tune” the volume of comments you see on popular sites including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and Disqus.

You can get the extension here from the Google Chrome Web Store.

The Tottington Centre Tea Room

February 25, 2019 by Lee 3 Comments

Back on episode 122 of the podcast I mentioned a little place giving away a free book with a brew.

I also mentioned you could probably walk it from Ramsbottom. Well, this past weekend I put my feet where my mouth is, or something like that.

Me and the family took a trip to Tottington from Ramsbottom, it took around an hour to get there and it was a beautiful day. Our 18 month old enjoyed being pushed around on the way (thankfully she didn’t want to get out and walk otherwise it might have been three hours!) and our five year old did fantastic considering it was 2.5 miles there and 2.5 miles back.

Latest Food Hygiene Ratings for Ramsbottom

January 24, 2019 by Lee Leave a Comment

The Bury Times has recently published an up to date list of food establishments taken from the Food Standards Agency website of various Food Hygiene ratings for Bury.

Rather than just throw a link in your face, I thought I’d go through and provide a Ramsbottom specific list for you. I’ve removed some which are listed as Ramsbottom but are a little outside the area so I’ve trimmed the list.

Thankfully, we currently have no one or two star ratings in Ramsbottom and the vast majority of our ratings are in the five and four star ratings.

Helping the homeless in Bury with WiNS

January 21, 2019 by Lee Leave a Comment

Freedom Church – Home of WiNS (Google Street View)

Tonight I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Lucie Holland, one of the members of WiNS (Winter Night Shelter) for Bury.

This all came about due to me having a bit of a clear out of a few bits and bobs (two bluetooth speakers and a wireless photo frame). No longer any use to me, but if anyone could make use of them, they were welcome to them.

I listed these on a Facebook group and Lucie replied indicating that they would be very useful for any homeless people that are being rehomed to help to make their new place a little more homely.

Naturally, I was more than happy that these items could go on to be of some use to someone in need. I didn’t know much about WiNS at the time, but have since discovered more about it so thought I’d share it.

WiNS is based out of Freedom Church in Bury, if you’re not aware of it, you’ve almost certainly driven past it at some point. It’s located next to Wickes on Walmersley Road, across the road from the old bury fire station.

Phillip Rose, Group IFA CEO responds to “Save the Grants”

November 15, 2018 by Phil Rose 11 Comments

The following is a reply from Phillip Rose, Group IFA CEO who have submitted the planning application for The Grants Arms:

Please support this Planning Application 63308

In response to Mr John Irelands appeal, I agree – The ‘Grants’ is to Ramsbottom what Blackpool Tower is to the Golden Mile, or the Opera House to Sydney Harbour, but you don’t need to tell a Ramsbottom lad that!

However, what is upsetting is that this iconic building which has stood proud as the mother of Ramsbottom, overlooking the Market Place for over 200 years is no longer the matriarch of the town but a sad limping old lady, a neglected and dilapidated old building which looks abandoned and unloved.

ROMANCE

Being an iconic building the ‘Grants’ will never be an office block. The planning application ensures it will be sympathetically renovated, with its clock and internal tower returned to its former glory to respectfully attend the march of time over the town. But, time cannot stand still and move with the times we must. The historic Grade 2 listed lady will be lovingly restored to give The Grant Arms a new lease of life, to stand proudly over the Market Place as a visual reminder of the areas cultural heritage once again.
