This month saw the Hungry Duck receive a Michelin Plate Award but what exactly IS a Michelin Plate award?

Now, I’m sure you’ll have heard of the much coveted Michelin Star (which Manchester has received for the first time in 40 years). Before I get to the Plate though, did you know, according to Lookers, Michelin stars originated when the Michelin brothers in France, in order to encourage drivers to travel further, and by thus wearing down more tyres, rated restaurants that people should go out of their way for. Cunning.

The Michelin Plate is the symbol for those restaurants that have neither a star nor a Bib Gourmand. For restaurants, being in the selection is the sign of very good food, and the Michelin Plate is the symbol for that.

The Plate is the third award that Michelin have on offer in addition to the star and the Bib Gourmand. Speaking of the Bib Gourmand, The Hearth of the Ram actually received this award in 2016, and as for the Plate award, not only does The Hungry Duck have one, but Levanter does too. I believe Levanter received theirs in 2018.

Non-League Day 2019

October 12, 2019 by Lee 1 Comment

October the 12th, non-league day. What was originally setup as a social media experiment by James Doe in 2010 meaning this is the 10th anniversary of it being setup.

His inspiration for the day was brought about by a pre-season trip to Devon to watch Queens Park Rangers play at Tavistock.

Now, non-League day is backed by Premier League and Football League clubs, MPs, celebrities, media organisations, charities and most importantly the non-league clubs themselves and the fans who turn up on the day.

The BBC have got a celebration of the day in a few photos on their website.

Today, on non-league day, Ramsbottom United take on Colne in the FA Trophy in Ramsbottom. Kick off is at 3pm. The weather looks pretty decent too. Go on, why not ⚽ 😉

There are other matches that take place in the football calendar, and the non-league website has them listed here, you know, just in case Ramsbottom United are away or something.

You may have read the article recently featuring local resident Chris Dixon and how Bury Adult Learning Service helped him in his recent journey.

What the article didn’t go into too much was the journey in detail, on World Mental Health Day Chris has been brave enough to share his story, please do take the opportunity to listen if you can and share.

This is Chris’s story.

If you have issues with mental health, support is available and you can get in touch with various national organisations listed on the Mental Health Foundation site.

Chris mentions a variety of local organisations and groups in his story, some of which are:

Bury Healthy Minds
RammyMen
Street Soccer Academy

Above all, Chris’s message is:

There is help out there, there is empathetic, understanding, respectful, kind and humble people who will listen.
Please don’t suffer in silence like I did for so many years. Remember, it takes strength to talk, it isn’t weakness. You’re worthwhile, you matter, you’re not alone.

Search for mystery artist after 19 year discovery under wallpaper

October 6, 2019 by Lee 2 Comments

It’s not uncommon to discover things whilst going through some home improvements. An old newspaper here, a height chart drawn on a door frame there, or, in this case, a work of art under the wallpaper.

Ramsbottom resident Bobbie Dowding posted to the “What’s on in Ramsbottom” Facebook group asking to help track down a mystery artist:

So my mam has stripped the wall in my sisters room and uncovered this art work 😂 it’s been signed at the bottom right hand corner by ?.Holden. We’ve lived in Ramsbottom since 2000 so she’s curious to find out who painted it all those years ago and hopes that they might see this post, if anyone might know who this is then please tag them 😊

Bobbie Dowding – Facebook

It’s a little tricky to see the signature, but after asking Bobbie, she has provided a better shot, and it looks like R Holden.

I did a little digging into the cartoon piece, and I believe it’s originally from Asterix in Britain:

Are you the mysterious R Holden?

The Rake Hill Climb is back! Yes, it means the road will be closed, no it won’t still be closed on Monday and yes you should stop when it says road closed.

A new business, Wisteria Nails & Beauty opens in Ramsbottom.

Did you manage to get to see Ramsbottom – 200 years in Pictures this weekend? I’m going to try to, with a two year old, so wish me (and the pictures) luck.
