This month saw the Hungry Duck receive a Michelin Plate Award but what exactly IS a Michelin Plate award?
Now, I’m sure you’ll have heard of the much coveted Michelin Star (which Manchester has received for the first time in 40 years). Before I get to the Plate though, did you know, according to Lookers, Michelin stars originated when the Michelin brothers in France, in order to encourage drivers to travel further, and by thus wearing down more tyres, rated restaurants that people should go out of their way for. Cunning.
The Michelin Plate is the symbol for those restaurants that have neither a star nor a Bib Gourmand. For restaurants, being in the selection is the sign of very good food, and the Michelin Plate is the symbol for that.
The Plate is the third award that Michelin have on offer in addition to the star and the Bib Gourmand. Speaking of the Bib Gourmand, The Hearth of the Ram actually received this award in 2016, and as for the Plate award, not only does The Hungry Duck have one, but Levanter does too. I believe Levanter received theirs in 2018.
