An award-winning bakery with 200 years of history has just done something it has never done before. Cissy Greens Bakery, based on Deardengate in Haslingden, has opened a second shop for the very first time, and it’s here in Ramsbottom.
The new place is called Little Cissy’s, and it opened its doors on Friday 23rd October. According to the bakery’s own social media announcement, you can expect a selection of their best-selling pies, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, and – this is the important bit if you’ve been caught out by the weather lately – some space to sit in and eat out the rain. Their words, and honestly a pretty convincing pitch.
Cissy Greens is probably best known for its traditional handcrafted pies. The baker behind them, Matt Haworth, picked up a silver award at the Great British Food Awards for the bakery’s “Porky Mince Pie” not long ago, so there’s some proper national recognition behind the name.
What makes this expansion feel even more meaningful is the context around it. Just a year ago, things looked very different. Haslingden’s £1.54 million Big Lamp Project – a council-led town centre redevelopment – hit the bakery hard, with Matt saying at the time it was the toughest period in the business’s history. Customers were assuming everything was shut during the roadworks, and footfall dropped significantly as a result. To go from that to opening a second site in the space of a year is quite a turnaround.
Running a small independent bakery is no small thing at the best of times, so it’s good to see Cissy Greens coming out the other side and taking this next step.
I’d be curious to know where exactly Little Cissy’s has set up in Ramsbottom – if anyone has been in yet, drop a comment below and let us know what you thought.
