A very wet Tuesday morning saw me visiting the Eagle and Child to have a chat with Eve Townson and Glen Duckett.
If you’ve not heard of the Eagle and Child before, they are a multi-award winning family dining pub situated overlooking Ramsbottom.
Providing training and experience for many young adults; helping them learn a trade whilst building up their confidence in the hospitality industry. Similar to what Jamie Oliver did with Fifteen back in 2002, Glen Duckett is doing here in Ramsbottom.
I turned up and waited a few minutes for them to finish their meeting which had overrun slightly. Not a problem, I got a free coffee for my patience (perks of the job).
Once the meeting had finished we moved upstairs to avoid being interrupted, the pub was due to open in the next 15 minutes. On the way upstairs Eve mentioned that recently a clock had flown off the wall upstairs without anyone being near it, ahh, the old “scare the interviewer trick”, clearly a seasoned veteran.
I must confess, I wasn’t sure what to expect when meeting Glen and Eve. I was conscious of their accolades and imagined they wouldn’t have much time for me, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Not only did they make me feel very comfortable interviewing them, quickly it was obvious they were down to earth and very grounded despite all their achievements.
This interview is one I’ve personally been seeking to record since I started This is Rammy, as I know Glen is such a big part of the local community for employment, giving back and somewhere to eat.
The Eagle and Child is a shining example of how you can run a business but be grounded enough to realise that giving back to the local community is just as important as making a profit.
