The Bury Mutual Aid Group was formed by residents of the Borough of Bury to organise community response activities and has recently been majorly expanded to include many new volunteers across the borough to support people suffering from the direct and indirect effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic, by providing various services to support vulnerable and elderly people and those in self-isolation. We currently have over 500 new members and are still rapidly expanding, with many people very keen to do what they can to support their local communities and their most vulnerable residents.
The group is managed by a core team of volunteers, many of whom from public service backgrounds. BuryMAGs main goal is to utilise their large number of volunteers currently to provide support for those in isolation to reduce risk of infection, and to provide supplementary support to reduce pressure on public services, by providing services for those self-isolating and those engaged in emergency public service activities. These activities are envisioned to include food and supplies deliveries to those in isolation, emergency childcare arrangements for those in isolation or who are providing a public service response, auxiliary medical staff to support district nurses and reduce pressure on A&E services, isolation reduction and well-being schemes for those self-isolating, and borough level organisation and co-ordination activities to support local volunteers in providing adhoc services to their local residents.
