With just a couple of weeks until the Ramsbottom Jigsaw Festival (10th to 12th of September) I thought we could have a look at some of the history behind jigsaws and some fun facts too.

The first jigsaw puzzle is believed to have been made by engraver and cartographer John Spilsbury (1739 – 3 April 1769) in the 18th century.

The name jigsaw is actually wrong.
Jigsaws were originally called dissections but the name changed as new saws were introduced to produce them.
The new saws weren’t jigsaws at all but fretsaws!

The record for the most expensive jigsaw puzzle sold at auction was for The Golden Retriever Foundation auction at a bid of $27,000. It was made by Rachel Page Elliott (USA) who was 92 at the time.

Early jigsaws were actually maps that were cut around national borders as an aid to teaching geography.

In 1989 Stave Puzzles released an April Fool’s puzzle that had no solution!

Over the 3 days of the festival there will be over 800 completed jigsaws on display – each one made up especially for the festival by puzzle makers from the local area or further afield across East Lancashire / North Manchester.

The jigsaw with the most pieces ever was assembled in 2011 by students in Vietnam. It consisted of 551,232 pieces (each piece around 1 inch sq) and covered about 76′ x 48′.

The Ramsbottom Jigsaw Festival is taking place on these days:
Thursday 10 September 2015 10am-5pm
Friday 11 September 2015 10am-5pm
Saturday 12 September 2015 10am – 5pm
at St Paul’s Church, Bridge St, Ramsbottom, BL0 9BP
Admission is £2 for adults with accompanied children under 16 free and readmission by programme across all 3 days.
The Ramsbottom Jigsaw Festival is a joint venture between Edenfield Parish Church and St Paul’s Church Ramsbottom with all proceeds split between the churches.
