You might be out enjoying Northern Grip festival today, but you would have had to have been living under a rock to have not heard the words Pokemon and Go uttered together in the past few weeks. The game has not only taken the world by storm, it’s also taken Ramsbottom by storm. How do I know this? Well, I was out in Ramsbottom *cough* researching Pokemon Go when I came across a group of lads playing it, then I turned the corner, and what seemed to be the whole of the smoking corner from the Grey Mare were playing.
I did have a fairly scary encounter, I was heading towards St Andrews Church, which if you’re not aware is a Pokemon Gym (essentially a place where you can take control of it for your team). It was dark, and I was alone. I rounded the corner to be met by around 6 glowing lights all heading towards me. No, it wasn’t a supernatural encounter, it turned out, I wasn’t the only one headed to St Andrew’s Church that night to play Pokemon Go.
Bury Council say No! to fracking
Not everything happening in the past two weeks has been related to Pokemon though. There was some good news coming out of Bury Town Hall with regards to fracking.
It was the 13th of July where Bury Council have voted for a ban on fracking on any part of council owned Bury land. When I asked Karen Leach what this meant for the potential for fracking on privately owned land she replied:
It would be illegal to ban fracking on private land as the council has no jurisdiction.. Government have made banning it altogether impossible. But council have promised to rigorously assess any private applications and involve local community.
Which is the best we can hope for at the moment, I honestly hope that the big energy companies don’t try to make it worth the while of private landowners to cash in on our future in favour of fracking.
Bridge Street closes for over a month
National Grid will be renewing old gas pipeworks under Bridge Street in Ramsbottom and as a result it will remain closed for up to five weeks.
When Kay Brow closed for a while last year I came up with “Browmaggedon” which I thought was a catchy name for it, I can’t for the life of me think of one for Bridge Street closing, the best I’ve come up with is it’s going to be Carn-bridge. Even I accept that’s terrible, can you come up with better?
Anyway, Bridge Street will be closed from yesterday, the 23rd of July for several weeks, as well as upgrades to the gas pipe work, Bury council are going to coordinate highway maintenance works to repair footpaths and the road at the same time. So there will hopefully be fewer potholes, however I don’t recall there being too many on Bridge Street, apart from those near the station.
Park 66 Given Go Ahead for Transformation
You’ll probably be aware of the old retail park that was once called Park 66 in Pilsworth. After it closed in 2010 Park 66 sat neglected, well now it’s been demolished and it will soon make way for a shopping centre and retail experience, much like what was there before I expect. The shops that are expected include JD Sports, Iceland and Home Bargains. There are also suggestions that ALDI, KFC and Costa may also have a presence at the site.
Although I’ve not seen any plans yet, I expect it will look like a scaled down version of Manchester Fort.
Edit: The plans are starting to emerge now, as reported in 2017 in Bury Times.
