The rise of Smart motorways, are you ready for the M66 Smart Motorway?
Rossendale Free Press is reporting that in a bid to ease congestion and improve transport in our region the M66 is undergoing plans to introduce a Smart Motorway system, much like the M60 is currently having completed.
The news outlet reports that the Lancashire County Council’s masterplan recommends:
four potential options to solve congestion problems and to facilitate future economic growth; the introduction of bus priority measures for the X41/X43 service, improvements to junctions on the A56 between the M65 and M66 and at Simister Island, and upgrading the M66 to become a ‘smart’ motorway.
If funding for the proposals is approved work could begin on the schemes in 2020.
So what do I think?
On the one hand, I understand the issues given that I am frequently on the M66 at rush hour, however I have also put up with the roadworks on the M60 for the past several yearsSo the M66 is going to get some improvements in the next few years.
One of which being proposed is the introduction of a Smart motorway system. I am not looking forward to this, they’re only due to finish the M60 roadworks turning that into a Smart motorway next year, that’s been over three years in the making, I’m not sure I can handle more years of roadworks. Also, given the close proximity to the houses as well I can see them not being able to work as long or as late on the motorway as they can on the M60 meaning it would probably take even longer to complete the works despite being a smaller motorway.
What are your thoughts? Do you agree that the works are required or would you rather see the introduction of better transport routes? Get in touch, I’ve love to hear your views.
Social Media Fun – 4:57
I recently asked you on Facebook what you call the road at the back of your houses. Thankfully nobody said back passage, but the overwhelming majority of people said.
The breakdown for number of votes per comment are:
1 – Lane
3 – Entry
3 – Ginnel
5 – Back/Backs/Out back
8 – Back Street
11 – Back Alley
Which means, Back Alley/Alley wins with eleven votes, just beating Back Street by three votes which had eight.
Ramsbottom United News – 8:02
Ramsbottom beat Prescot Cables 4-2 in a bit of a goal bonanza, especially for Ramsbottom new signing Aaron Hollindrake who scored two goals on this his debut match. Not surprising there was also a goal from Ryan Salmon too.
That win means that we’re currently 14th in the Evo-Stik First Division North League but with just a couple more wins under our belt should see us ascend the table fairly quickly given there is a large mass of similar points around us.
